Reciting, memorizing, and character

What we are trying to do, and who we are trying to reach.

We teach Muslim children across North America to recite the Qur’an fluently with proper tajweed, to memorize it, and to keep it for the rest of their lives.

The Qur’an is also a way of life. So we teach foundational Islamic studies alongside it, and we give character the same weight as memorization, rooted in the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

We are especially committed to families without access to a good in-person program. No child should be left out because of where they live.

    Guided hifz at a pace the student sets.

    Noble character shaped by the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

The Method

What a week actually covers

A week at Qasas runs five separate bodies of work side by side. Each has its own syllabus and its own pace. Tajweed by itself takes years.

  1. المخارج والصفات

    The letters

    Where each letter is formed, and how it behaves once it is: heavy or light, voiced or whispered, held or released.

  2. أحكام التجويد

    The rules

    What happens when letters meet. Iẓhār, idghām, iqlāb and ikhfā’, the elongations, qalqalah and ghunnah, each with its own conditions.

  3. الوقف والابتداء

    The reading

    Where a verse may be paused and where pausing changes the meaning, how to resume, and the pace a passage is read at.

  4. الحفظ والمراجعة

    Memorization and revision

    New portions set against daily revision, so that what a student memorizes in their first year is still with them in their fifth.

  5. العلم والأدب

    Deen and character

    Foundational Islamic studies taught alongside recitation, and the adab of carrying the Qur’an.

The first layer in detail

The other four rest on the first. Every letter has a place in the mouth where it is formed, and that place is called a makhraj. Learn that, and a child can read the letter correctly in a word they have never seen before. Children taught by copying tend to stall the moment a word is unfamiliar.

    Our teachers work on professional microphones so students can hear the difference between ح and ه. Students as young as five hold their attention on this for a full hour.

    Why Qasas

    Four things we don’t compromise on

    The method above only works if the conditions around it hold. These are the four we protect.

    1. Our teachers are American too

      Our instructors are US-based. They speak the same English as their students, and they know what a Tuesday after school looks like in an American Muslim home. Children take correction more readily from someone they get on with.

    2. How we teach the letters

      Tajweed taught phonetically, from the makhraj outward, exactly as it has been transmitted for fourteen centuries. A child who learns the place of a letter reads it correctly in words nobody taught them.

    3. Each child at their own level

      Every class meets each child at their own level in tajweed, hifz and character. If a child needs another week on something, they get it. We also do not slow anyone down to keep the group tidy.

    4. Parents can see the work

      QuranPortal puts assignments, progress and teacher feedback in one place. You can look up what happened in class today instead of waiting for a report in June.

    Fair questions

    How do you make sure kids are focusing?

    Students work at a desk in a quiet room with the camera on. The teacher keeps the next task ready so there is no dead time, which is usually where attention goes. We have five-year-olds who manage a full hour.

    Isn’t online Qur’an teaching lower quality than in-person?

    We teach online so that families outside the big cities can reach a qualified teacher at all. Our teachers use proper cameras and microphones rather than whatever is built into a laptop, so students can hear the fine differences in tajweed. Connections are good enough now that dropped calls are rare.

    From a few students on Zoom to classrooms across a continent

    How the school started, and what its name means.

    Qasas is Arabic for stories. The school takes its name from it, and we think of every child who joins as a story beginning.

    1. 2022

      A gentle beginning

      Qasas Academy began in February 2022 when Ustadh Abdallah Haq started teaching a few Qur’an students over Zoom. The accessibility of online classes, combined with a gentle and effective teaching style, quickly drew more families.

    2. 2023

      A proven model takes shape

      Testing and refinement shaped a proven model for teaching tajwīd and ḥifẓ online. Every Qasas Academy classroom uses it today.

    3. Today

      Stories across North America

      That beginning grew into a school. We help children build a living relationship with the Qur’ān. They learn to recite it with fluency and precision, and to carry its teaching in their character, after the example of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ.
